CAFE MATASSA
31, Saechang-ro 6na-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul

In a quiet alley of Dohwa-dong, there is a cafe, Matassa, that looks quite different from the ordinary neighborhood atmosphere. Filled with rich, nutty aromas and sweet fragrances, this place is always bustling with visitors. Located near Gongdeok Station, Matassa is a cozy hideaway for those seeking genuine baked pastries and an Italian espresso bar-based dessert cafe.

Amid the growing dessert market, where stores that lack substance have been popping up like mushrooms after rain, Matassa’s baked goods offer peace and a high level of satisfaction to those weary from repeated disappointments. Just one bite is enough to feel Matassa's sincerity and care regarding quality.

Matassa’s madeleines are accompanied by fresh flowers, stimulating both the visual and gustatory senses. Following this, the soft and fluffy texture unique to madeleines, paired with the refreshing lemon aroma, delivers a perfect hint of sweetness. Another signature menu item here, the plain croissant, has an intensely crispy texture that beautifully spreads a mild sweetness and buttery fragrance in the mouth.

If I were to recommend one croissant, it would be the caramel almond croissant. The caramel glaze and almond slices harmonize to maximize the texture, and the chocolate gently seeps into the moist, lively layers. Additionally, there are various options such as different types of croissants and queen amans, as well as pistachio ganache cookies and cocoa chips, leading to delightful dilemmas.

Another key menu item at Matassa is the coffee granita, which shines even more when paired with desserts. This drink, a bit unfamiliar in Korea, is made from freezing strong espresso and then finely grinding it into a slushy texture, allowing for a uniquely varied coffee flavor. The rich sweetness of the granita and the mild sweetness of the baked goods create the ultimate harmony. If caffeine is a concern, you can choose a smooth milk slush or refreshing lemon slush according to your preference.

The cafe space is not very large, but the coziness and unique warmth felt within its smallness stir the heart, much like a sweet dessert. Sitting at the bar tables lined against the walls, people share their small daily lives and enhance the joy of sharing delicious desserts. While seating is limited, takeout is available, so anyone can enjoy Matassa, and the cute packaging makes it perfect for gifting to loved ones.

Recently, the second branch opened near Hyochang Park, expanding the space a bit more than the first location and adding cake options, allowing you to experience another ambiance while maintaining Matassa's warm atmosphere. Matassa may not be large and flashy, but within that small space lies a little but special happiness.
